ยท Sustaining Leadership |
To develop into a lifelong learner and a vital piece of many networks. |
By attending Imprint, I will continue to create networks to carry me into the future job market. I will work to keep these lines of communication open by getting in touch with at least three contacts per semester either by e-mail, letter, or phone call. |
I have made numerous contacts via internship searching, conference networking, and STAR connections. This semester I have reached out to many people in my network to congratulate them on their new job or promotion, ask for help in searching for internships, as well as thanking them for providing me with references and recommendations. |
Although the field of recreation, sport, and tourism may appear large from the outside, but in reality it is a very tight knit community. It is never too early to start networking for jobs, areas of expertise, or recommendations. Because of this, it is important to not only remember who you know, but who knows you. By sustaining leadership, I want to work towards creating a large, supportive network made up of professionals, educators, and peers that I can call upon whenever the situation arises. With such a large network, it becomes easier to ask around for advice, borrowing equipment, or to see if anyone has ideas on what kind of program to run for a specific demographic. It is vital to keep in contact with your connections and to maintain open, positive lines of communication. I have learned that in this field, people are willing to do just about anything and go out of their way just to help out a friend of a friend. Remember, it is all about who you know and who knows you. Because the leisure industry is such a people-oriented mind frame, your connections and their connections are truly friendly people and will take into consideration what you say just because you came highly recommended.
As I enter the work force in the recreation, sport, and tourism field I must remember to help those who seek it, and even those who do not know they are looking for some direction; after all, that was me just a short time ago. When called upon for a favor or suggestion, I will always work to make a connection because you never know when that connection can help you in return.
With my dive into the world of careers and responsibilities, it is a constant job maintaining those clean lines of communication. One thing I will work to establish is finding out what makes an excellent contact as opposed to one that becomes only interested in furthering themselves. Networks are a vital part of life, thus it is important to have a solid net of connections to help you through.
